About the Watershed

The Pompeston Creek flows into the Delaware River between Riverton and Cinnaminson, in Burlington County, New Jersey (see Figures 1 and 2).  Although the Pompeston Creek is relatively small, it is of high value to the communities through which it flows.  It runs through several public parks where children fish and play in the stream during warm weather.  Furthermore, the Pompeston Creek empties into the Delaware River less than 1.5 miles from the surface water intake for the New Jersey-American Water Company (NJAWCo) pipeline in Delran, which serves as a drinking water source for many residents in New Jersey.

Based on the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP)’s Geographic Information System (GIS) coverage, the creek is tidal (but entirely fresh water) to approximately 0.45 miles downstream from Route 130 at Lakeview Memorial Park and Memorial Lake.  The Pompeston begins in Moorestown, and its watershed (a watershed is the area of land which all drains to the same body of water) extends into Cinnaminson, Delran, and Riverton, covering approximately 8.6 square miles. The Pompeston Creek is bounded mostly by residential, commercial, and industrial development with some minor open space; the watershed is estimated to be about 80% urbanized1.
